Why Holidays are Over Rated

A holiday is a day where something is celebrated and people don't work. Which, quite frankly is UNTRUE, especially if you work in the food service or hospitality industry. During holidays, we're supposed to share and spend time together... But what do we actually learn from holidays? Except for some history that most people don't even know or care about, I say nothing. We learn absolutely nothing. Don't believe me? Let me break down a few of our (U.S.) federal holidays.

January 1st: New Years Day
We start the year with food, fireworks, alcohol, watching some kind of countdown on your television with a bunch of friends, family, and/or strangers. What do we celebrate? Making it through another 365 or 366 days(leap year).

3rd Monday in January: MLK day

Martin Luther King day celebrates the life and achievements of Dr.MLK Jr.

MLK played a very important role in ending segregation. He led the Civil Rights Movement in the 50s and 60s, he "fought" so we could be judged "not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character." So what do we do on MLK day? Well, in schools they teach the students about MLK...every...freaking...year, and outside of that people march. Heck, I have no idea what else we do on MLK day since I've NEVER seen someone outside of school celebrate it.

Last Monday in May: Memorial Day
On Memorial day we celebrate those who have died  while serving in the USAF ( United States Armed Forces ) But really all I've ever seen are BBQs at the beach...again, with alcohol and potential fireworks. Not many people are taking the time to learn WHY, or WHO, or even WHERE.
July 4: Independence Day

AKA 4th of July... Although I wont ever understand how we went from calling it Independence day to a day on the calendar day. What i mean by that is we call Christmas, Christmas not the 25th of December! Anywho, self explanatory, Independence day is to celebrate our Independence...by drinking and blowing up fireworks. Most people can't even remember what year it was signed in. Many more people don't know that July 4th 1776 was just the day that the Declaration of Independence was formally accepted. Even on that day, not all signatures that are now present, were on that document.

1st Monday in September
Created as a way to celebrate workers' contributions. Also celebrated with a BBQ. By the way, this name is very confusing seeing as nobody is supposed to work, but it is literally called work day. Nothing learned.
Moving on...

November 11: Veterans Day

To honor US veterans and victims of war... redundant holiday?
Now I don't mean to offend with that statement/question. It's just that my whole idea of Veterans Day and Memorial Day is that they practically "celebrate" or remember the same thing with the exception of veterans day the living are also celebrated.

4th Thursday of November: Thanksgiving
December 25th: Christmas

For expressing gratitude and commemorating the birth of Jesus. Except we use these days to be gluttons and give/receive as many gifts as possible. All we needed to learn about these holidays was taught to us at school in kindergarten or at church (for those of you whose parents dragged you along as a kid).

        So why are holidays overrated?

The main issue is, that to most people, they're just off days, party days, and nothing is learned. America is a melting pot of people. There's so many different kind of people living on this land and most of us are ignorant to other cultures and customs. There are so many people who have no idea what it's like in the life of the other.
I think having a culture day/holiday could change that. A day where all the neighbors come out and meet each other and share their culture with someone else. All the Jamaicans, Haitians, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Americans, Filipinos, Chinese, Vietnamese...there's so many things we could learn from each other.
Culture day would be pretty cool, plus you'd always learn something new. Until this becomes an actual holiday or event, cheers to the holidays we do have.

Until next time

                                           LocaSmiles :D
